Iranian Delegation Due in Moscow Next Week: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A delegation of Iranian lawmakers and senior officials of the country plan to pay a visit to the Russian capital as part of efforts to promote Tehran-Moscow ties in diverse economic areas, a parliamentarian said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, the representative of the northeastern city of Bandar Torkaman in the parliament, Ramin Nour-Qolipour said a group of MPs from the parliament’s commissions of National Security and Foreign Policy, Agriculture, Industries and Energy plan to visit Moscow on Monday and Tuesday.

He said a number of officials from the country’s Agriculture Ministry and Interior Ministry as well as governors general of the northern provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran will also accompany the delegation.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s legitimate government against foreign-backed militancy.

They have also enhanced trade and banking ties since the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), came into force in January 2016.

In January 2017, Iran and Russia held a conference in Tehran to mark 515 years of bilateral relations. In a message to the conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for diversification of relations between the two countries, which he said will contribute to peace and stability in Central Asia and the Middle East.
