President: Iran Favors Prosperity of Region

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Unlike certain countries that pursue military aggression and have bombed their neighbors, Iran uses its power only for defense, and believes that its development depends on progress and prosperity of all regional countries, President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday.

In comments at a weekly cabinet session, Rouhani said Iran is never concerned about the progress of others, voicing Tehran’s support for collective development in the region and its interest in the prosperity of all neighbors and regional states.

Iran’s military, economic, political, cultural and social power would not harm others, the president underlined, saying the Islamic Republic boosts its defense power only for deterrence.

Denouncing plots by some regional countries to foment Iranophobia, the president said Iran has never invaded any country, bombed its neighbors or put pressure on people of the region.

“Our weapons are for peace, strengthening stability and security, and discouraging others from invading our country,” Rouhani added.

Slamming Israeli officials’ comments about Iran, the president said those behind regional wars and crises over the past 70 years or the Sabra and Shatila massacre are in no position to talk about Iran.

“Iran is not a threat to anyone. Iran is (the source of) stability and security for the entire region,” Rouhani said, stressing also that Tehran will vigorously defend its rights.

In remarks in February, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei called for efforts to maintain and boost Iran’s defense capabilities, hitting back at the enemies for disputing the country’s missile program.

“Without a moment of hesitation, the country must move to acquire whatever is necessary for defense, even if the whole world is opposed to it,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, describing plans to develop and renovate Iran’s defense strategies and equipment as a top priority.
