JCPOA Can Still Be Saved: Russian Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's nuclear deal can still be saved, Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Non-Proliferation and Weapons Control Department Mikhail Ulyanov said.

"I think that it's not time yet come for unambiguously pessimistic conclusions. The nuclear deal can still be saved," Ulyanov said, RIA Novosti reported on Saturday.

Ulyanov explained that Moscow proceeds from the fact that at the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference, which will be held from April 23 to May 4, the supporters of the JCPOA “should raise their voice in support of this deal”.

US President Donald Trump in January set a 120-day deadline for US lawmakers and European allies to fix his predecessor Barack Obama's main foreign policy achievement or face a US exit.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) reached the 159-page nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed Iran’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
