Iran Welcomes Armenian Parliament’s Decision to Choose New PM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Saturday welcomed Armenia’s parliament’s election of a new prime minister, and voiced Tehran’s support for peace in the neighboring countries.

“The neighboring countries and their peace, stability and security have always been a top priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran and we are ready to develop and deepen relations with Armenia in all areas,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said.

His comments came after Armenia's parliament elected opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinyan as the country's new prime minister.

Pashinyan spearheaded weeks of largely peaceful protests that gripped the country in political turmoil.

His election by a 59-42 vote on Tuesday overcomes one hurdle in resolving the crisis, but the Republican Party that he opposed retains a majority in parliament.
