Iran, Sri Lanka Ink MoUs on Cooperation in Diverse Fields

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – High-ranking officials from Iran and Sri Lanka signed five cooperation documents on a wide range of topics in a bid to boost the bilateral relations between the two Asian countries in various areas.

In a ceremony in Tehran on Sunday attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Sri Lankan counterpart, Maithripala Sirisena, the two sides signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and a document on joint cultural exchange programs.

The documents cover a wide range of issues, including the fight against illicit drugs and drug precursors, health and medical science, standardization, education, laboratory services, and the film industry.

The Sri Lankan president and his accompanying delegation arrived in Tehran on Sunday morning for a two-day official visit.

Speaking at a meeting with Sri Lanka’s new ambassador to Iran, Sharif Anis, back in October, Rouhani hailed the ties between the two countries as close and cordial and said, “The two governments are willing to develop the relations and cooperation in all fields.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to expand and strengthen commercial, economic, scientific and cultural relations with Sri Lanka,” he said at the time.
