UN Condemns Israel's Use of Force against Palestinians
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UN human rights office condemned Monday's "appalling deadly violence" by Israeli forces in Gaza and said it was extremely worried about what might happen later, while calling for an independent investigation.
UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a regular UN briefing in Geneva that lethal force must only be used a last resort.
UN general secretary António Guterres also said he was “profoundly alarmed and concerned by the sharp escalation of violence and the number of Palestinians killed and injured in the Gaza protests.”
He also called for restraint on both sides.
The Gaza Health Ministry put the Palestinian death toll in Gaza border protests on Monday at 60, including 57 people killed by Israeli army fire and a baby who died from tear gas inhalation.
Another child has died from injuries sustained in Monday’s protests. Talal Adel Ibrahim Matar (16) who was wounded by Israeli soldiers yesterday, died from his wounds this morning.
It said 14 minors, including 8-months-old Laila al-Ghandour, have now died after Israel fired live rounds and teargas at the protesters.
It added that more than 2,700 people were injured Monday, including 1,360 by live fire. Of the wounded, 129 are in serious or critical condition.
On Monday, tens of thousands of Palestinians rallied near Israel's border fence to protest a blockade of their territory and the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem (al-Quds) that day.
