UK Supports Investment in Iran: Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The British ambassador to Tehran voiced his country’s support for companies investing in Iran, reaffirming London’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

London supports companies willing to make investment in Iran, and also backs enhancement of trade with Tehran, Rob Macaire told reporters on Wednesday, on the sidelines of ceremony for signing a Heads of Agreement (HOA) between the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC) and Pergas, a London-based consortium of oil and gas exploration companies.

The UK government insists on supporting trade with Iran, the ambassador said, adding that the agreement on development of an Iranian oilfield signifies London’s commitment to trade ties with Tehran.

Macaire said private companies decide on their own to make investment and that has not to do with the governmnet, but assured the companies willing to invest in Iran of state support.

As regards the US withdrawal from the JCPOA, Macaire said the European parties to the deal have told Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif that Tehran’s benefits from the nuclear deal should be guaranteed.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the nuclear deal, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations.

In a speech on May 9, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei urged that any decision to keep the deal running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the three European parties to the JCPOA.
