President Rouhani Congratulates Venezuela’s Maduro on Re-Election
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani offered his congratulations to Nicolas Maduro on his re-election as the president of the Latin American country.
“Undoubtedly, the successful, calm and healthy holding of this election, which was done under the shadow of economic sanctions and foreign powers’ threats, is a great success and victory for the Venezuelan government and people,” Rouhani said in a message to Maduro on Saturday.
On behalf of the Iranian people and government, Rouhani expressed solidarity with “the nation and government of Bolivarian Venezuela,” and hoped that through joint efforts of the two countries’ officials, both nations will witness closer ties in various fields.
Maduro was sworn in Thursday for a second term as president of the Latin American country.
Maduro swore "to respect and enforce the Constitution and lead all revolutionary changes" in a ceremony before the Constituent Assembly.
The 55-year-old former bus driver was re-elected Sunday. His election for a second six-year term maintains him in the presidency until 2025.
