Anti-Israeli UN Resolution Sign of Growing US, Israeli Isolation: Haniyeh
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh said a recent UN resolution against excessive use of force by Israeli troops against Palestinian civilians reflected the fact the the US and the Zionist regime of Israel are getting more and more isolated in the world.
“The resolution is an indication of the US and the Zionist regime’s isolation,” Ismail Haniyeh said, according to the Palestinian Information Center on Friday.
The UN General Assembly condemned Israel on Wednesday for excessive use of force against Palestinian civilians and asked UN chief Antonio Guterres to recommend an “international protection mechanism” for occupied Palestinian territory.
The General Assembly adopted the resolution with 120 votes in favor, eight against and 45 abstentions. It was put forward in the General Assembly by Algeria, Turkey and the Palestinians after the United States vetoed a similar resolution in the 15-member UN Security Council earlier this month.
Commenting on Washington’s decision late last year to recognize occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital, Haniyeh said decisions by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Jerusalem could not change the identity of the holy land.
He also called on Gazans to keep up their protests near the Gaza border, underlining the need for unity and solidarity among the Palestinians in the face of enemies’ plots.
Tensions have been running high near the Gaza fence since March 30, which marked the start of a series of protests, dubbed “The Great March of Return,” demanding the right to return for those driven out of their homeland.
At least 130 Palestinians have been killed and 13,900 others wounded by Israeli forces over the past few weeks, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry.
The Gaza clashes reached their peak on May 14, the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Nakba Day (the Day of Catastrophe), which coincided this year with the US embassy relocation from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem.
