Palestinians Continue Rallies against PA’s Sanctions on Gaza

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Hundreds of Palestinians staged a protest rally in al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Friday to voice their outrage over sanctions imposed by the Palestinian Authority (PA) against people living in the Gaza Strip, local reports said.

During the demonstration, held after Eid al-Fitr prayers in the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in al-Quds, the protesters chanted slogans in solidarity with Gazans.

The demonstrators also carried placards reading, “Imposing sanctions on Gaza is a crime”, “Lift sanctions on Gaza”, and “First, apologize to the children of Gaza”.

On Sunday and Tuesday, Palestinians in the West Bank had held similar demonstrations calling on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, to lift the sanctions on the Gazans.

Abu Mazen has imposed a series of punitive measures against the Gaza Strip, halting salary payments to thousands of government employees and refusing to pay for the strip’s electricity in an attempt to mount pressure on Hamas.

The sanctions have infuriated the people of Gaza -inhabited by some 1.8 million residents- who already suffer from harsh humanitarian conditions, power outages, and insufficient water and food stuff.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior spokesman for Hamas, has praised the popular demonstration in Ramallah, describing it as a step in the right path.
