Syrian Army Makes Major Gains near Jordan Border: State Media

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian army has seized a chunk of territory from terrorists in the southwest, Syrian state media said on Tuesday, the first major government advance in an offensive near the Jordanian border.

The Syrian army has taken control of the town of Busra al-Harir and the nearby Laja area, SANA news agency reported.

The capture of the area cut across a militant-held finger of territory in northeastern Daraa province, where President Bashar al-Assad has pressed his assault.

Syria’s southwest region is strategically sensitive because of its proximity to the frontiers with both Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The recapture came after a location near Damascus International Airport was hit by two Israeli missiles.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the missiles had targeted an arms depot belonging to Hezbollah located close to the airport.

Syrian media reported that the Arab country’s air defense confronted the missiles and shot them down.
