"Just like our Chinese counterparts, we are interested in preserving and fully implementing the JCPOA,” Lavrov said at a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Vienna on Friday.
“The situation is complex, but, just like China and other parties to the deal, we are committed to international law and the UN Security Council’s decision this plan was enshrined in thus becoming part of international law," the minister stressed, according to Russia's official TASS news agency.
The remarks came ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany in Vienna later today to discuss Europe’s package of economic measures to save the JCPOA following the US exit.
On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has underlined that any decision to keep the JCPOA running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the Europeans.
