Drunk Driver Kills 3 in Tehran: Police

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Tehran’s Traffic Police Chief Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Mehmandar said a drunk driver on Saturday hit six workers of the city’s municipality, killing three and injuring three others.

General Mehmandar said the deadly car accident occurred at 6:40 am (local time) in Babaei Highway in northern Tehran.

“Unfortunately, in the incident, the car hit 6 workers of the municipality, while they were sitting on the side of the highway waiting for the bus to take (them home),” he said, adding that as a result of the accident, 3 people died immediately on the scene and 3 others were transferred to a hospital.

“Unfortunately, in a (breath alcohol) test taken from the driver and passengers, it was confirmed that the three of them were not in normal conditions and had consumed alcohol,” the commander said.

According to media reports, the victims of the deadly car crash are mostly Afghan nationals.

Iran has a good road network but accidents caused by reckless drivers kill thousands each year.

In 2015, more than 16,000 people were killed in road accidents, according to the traffic police quoted by state television website IRINN, down from 28,000 deaths a decade ago.
