Iran Sympathizes with Indonesia over Fatal Quake

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed sympathy with the Indonesian nation and government over the deaths of scores of people in an earthquake that rocked the Southeast Asian country’s tourist island of Lombok on Sunday.

In a message on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi offered his condolences to Indonesians, including families of victims of the temblor.

The magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Lombok island on Sunday. The country's National Board for Disaster Management said Monday that 91 people have been killed and 209 others injured in the quake. Thousands more people were displaced as thousands of buildings were destroyed.

Despite the island’s status as a tourist location, officials said everyone who died was an Indonesian citizen. They said most of those who died were struck by falling debris from collapsed buildings.
