Iran’s Mehrzad Wins IPC Athlete of The Month Award

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Morteza Mehrzad from Iran has claimed the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month award for July.

Mehrzad helped Iran win gold medal at the 2018 Sitting Volleyball World Championships, Paralympic.org reported.

At 2.46m tall, Mehrzad was at his dominant best to help Iran regain the men’s world title by beating defending champions Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) in the final held in the Netherlands.

Mehrzad received 60 percent of the public votes. Brazilian thrower Elizabeth Gomes was second in the polls with 35 percent. Swedish wheelchair tennis player Stefan Olsson, British wheelchair racer Kare Adenegan, and Dutch wheelchair tennis player Diede de Groot were also nominated.

Members of the public voted for their winner using a poll on the IPC website.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.
