TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the US government’s isolation in the international arena and said currently, even Washington’s close allies have “distanced themselves” from its unilateral measures.

US Currently in Worst Ever Situation: Iranian President

“Today, there are a small number of scholars, intellectuals and commentators in the United States who agree with the White House officials, and even some of them explicitly describe them as fools and idiots, and this is rare in American history,” Rouhani said during a cabinet session on Wednesday.

“Today, the US’ allies do not side with it politically and even its traditional allies have distanced themselves from this country and are proud of this distance,” he said, adding, “This is while they once were proud to be with the United States.”

The Iranian president further emphasized that currently, except for a few “notorious” states, no country is siding with the Americans.

Washington is now in its “worst global situation”, Rouhani said, adding that even international organizations such as the UNESCO, the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), are opposed to the US policies.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the Iran nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

On August 6, Trump signed an executive order, re-imposing many sanctions on Iran. He said the US policy is to levy “maximum economic pressure” on the Islamic Republic.

Trump also restated his opinion that the 2015 Iran nuclear deal was a “horrible, one-sided deal”.

Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.

The European Union has vowed to counter Trump’s renewed sanctions on Iran, including by means of a new law to shield European companies from punitive measures.
