Iran, Cuba Urge Action against US Unilateralism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The presidents of Iran and Cuba stressed the need for collective efforts to counter the US government’s breach of international agreements, including its pullout from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel met on the sidelines of the 73rd annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday.

Highlighting the two countries’ record of fighting against imperialism and unilateralism, Rouhani said the US government has violated its deals with Cuba in the past years in the same way that it withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) -the international nuclear agreement between Iran and six other countries.

He further stressed the numerous grounds available for closer political, economic and scientific interaction between Tehran and Havana, describing joint action against terrorism around the world as one of the main areas of bilateral cooperation.

For his part, the Cuban leader praised Iran’s smart and decisive behavior in the nuclear talks, and slammed the US withdrawal from the JCPOA as a major threat to international treaties and to regional security.

Diaz-Canel also voiced the Latin American nation’s willingness to enhance relations with Iran is various fields.

The Iranian president arrived in New York on Sunday to attend the UN General Assembly and hold sideline meetings.

He has said that the UNGA provides an opportunity for better explication of the US breach of international regulations.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
