Iran, Armenia Discuss Closer Economic Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian and Armenian leaders explored avenues for stronger economic cooperation between the two neighbors on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

In a meeting with Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan in New York on Tuesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced Tehran’s readiness to boost economic ties with Yerevan in diverse fields, as in the energy swap.

He also highlighted the significance of a major transportation route that links the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea, saying Iran is prepared to complete the North-South corridor by providing technical and engineering services.

Iran would encourage its private sector to engage in trade activities in Armenia and is also ready to facilitate the activity of Armenian investors, Rouhani added.

For his part, Pashinyan called for a jump in Iran-Armenia economic cooperation and immediate implementation of the agreements the two neighbors have already signed.

Stressing the need for new plans to bolster economic ties, such as the energy swap, the Armenian prime minister said his country is also eager to work with Iran to complete the North-South corridor.

Rouhani has held several meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the 73rd UN General Assembly. On Tuesday, he delivered a speech to the gathering.
