President Calls for Closer Iran-UK Banking Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the importance of the Islamic Republic’s relations with Britain in diverse spheres and said closer banking cooperation between the two countries can further deepen trade ties.

Speaking at a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May in New York on Tuesday, Rouhani said the Islamic Republic is willing to promote mutual cooperation with the UK in all areas.

“Expansion of banking cooperation between the two countries can lead to further development of economic and trade ties between the two sides as well as joint investment,” he said.

Rouhani also denounced the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as “illegal” and said, “By expanding cooperation and consultations, we should try to develop an appropriate framework for maintaining and fully implementing this agreement, especially in economic areas.”

The British premier, for her part, stressed the necessity to protect the JCPOA and said London and Tehran should boost cooperation in this regard.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Rouhani arrived in New York on Sunday evening to participate in the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking to reporters at John F. Kennedy International Airport upon his arrival, Rouhani said he would have sideline meetings and interviews during the trip.

The president also said that the UNGA provides an opportunity for a better explication of the US breach of international regulations.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
