Iran Hosts Region’s National Security Officials

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The first meeting of national security officials of a number of regional countries was held in Tehran, with Iran’s representative calling for a new security architecture based upon the capabilities of regional actors.

National security authorities from Iran, Russia, China, India and Afghanistan gathered in Tehran on Wednesday for a meeting initiated by the Islamic Republic to discuss regional and international developments.

In an opening address, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani highlighted the significance of continued constructive talks in creating security, peace and welfare in the region.

Calling for concerted action against intellectual sources of terrorism, Shamkhani proposed that the regional actors should achieve a new security architecture on the basis of their own capabilities.

He also emphasized the need to cut off financial support for terrorism and employment of common intelligence and security capacities to create synergy in the war on terror.

Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Nikolai Patrushev also took the podium to hail Iran’s initiative in holding the meeting, describing it as an influential step in the coordination of efforts for sustainable security.

The representatives of China, India and Afghanistan also spoke at the event, proposing ideas for the fight against extremism and terrorism.
