Satellite Images Reveal Extent of Damage to Indonesia Following Tsunami, Earthquake (+Video)

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Satellite images reveal the full extent of the damage to Indonesia from an earthquake followed by a tsunami that tore through the country and killed nearly 1,234 people.

Fears remain that the death toll will rise further after the magnitude-7.5 earthquake caused a tsunami brought down buildings, flooded cities and tore homes apart.

Palu was one of the worst-affected cities, with several neighborhoods almost completely wiped out, ABC reported.

The natural phenomenon of liquefaction — when saturated soil becomes so substantially weak, it effectively turns to liquid — is also believed to have played its part, especially in areas like the Petobo neighborhood, where once green fields and farmland were replaced by mud and sludge.

The extent of damage can be seen in satellite images before and after the tsunami.
