New Iraqi President Lauds Iran’s Support in War on Terror
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraq’s new President Barham Salih praised Iran for supporting his country in the fight against terrorism and in defeating the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.
In a Sunday meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi, Salih said Iraq and Iran play an important role in upholding peace and stability in the region.
He also hailed Iran for supporting the Iraqi nation in the fight against Daesh.
Salih also said Iraq seeks “deep negotiations on sensitive issues” in the region in the future, saying the current crisis in the region is unacceptable, according to Al Forat news.
The Iranian envoy, for his part, congratulated the Iraqi president on taking office, voicing Iran’s support for a “strong and independent” Iraq.
Masjedi also acknowledged Iraq’s good relations with the neighbors and the international community, saying the Arab country needs a strong government given its resources and experiences.
On September 2, Iraq’s parliament elected as president Kurdish politician Barham Salih, who immediately named Adel Abdul Mahdi prime minister-designate, ending months of deadlock after a national election in May.
Salih is a former prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and a former deputy prime minister of the Iraqi federal government.
