Spokesman Rejects Trump’s Repetitive, False Claims against Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi dismissed as “false and baseless” recent claims made by US President Donald Trump against the Islamic Republic, saying he is ill-informed about the conditions of the Middle East.
“It seems that Trump lacks essential knowledge about the region’s conditions, history, and people, as well as developments in this part of the world in recent years,” Qassemi said on Friday.
His well-known advisers also discredit Trump and the American people by ignoring the US national interests and providing him with misinformation received from terrorist groups in the region, the spokesman added.
“Unfortunately, the US president has become accustomed to expressing some repetitive, false and baseless stories against Iran,” Qassemi said, adding, “Of course, we know that quitting a habit is somewhat difficult, but with a little effort it would be possible.”
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday, Trump claimed that Iran was going to “take over everything: Syria, Yemen” and it was stopped when Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in May.
On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal that was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany).
Trump on August 6 signed an executive order re-imposing many sanctions on Iran, three months after pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal.
He said the US policy is to levy “maximum economic pressure” on the country.
Trump also restated his opinion that the 2015 Iran nuclear deal was a “horrible, one-sided deal”.
