UN Official, Iranian Diplomat Hold Talks in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior UN official for humanitarian affairs met with an Iranian foreign minister special assistant about the conflicts in the Middle East and ways to help the war-hit people of Yemen in particular.

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Partnerships with the Middle East and Central Asia Rashid Khalikov held talks with Iranian foreign minister's special assistant for political affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, in Tehran on Sunday.

The two officials talked about the cooperation between Iran and the UN on humanitarian issues, including the efforts to help crisis-stricken countries in West Asia.

Khalikov and Jaberi Ansari also discussed the dire humanitarian conditions in Yemen and an upcoming international conference on humanitarian assistance for Yemeni people.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against Yemen in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 15,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
