Head of Kabul Ulema Council Killed by Unknown Assailants

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The head of Kabul Ulema Council, Mawlawi Abdul Basir Haqqani, was assassinated by unknown assailants in Chehel Sutun area in Kabul, according to police.

Head of Kabul police media office said in a statement that a suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.

Haqqani was found dead on a road in Kabul’s PD7 area on Saturday afternoon.

Some eyewitnesses told police that he was shot in the head by a group of gunmen, according to Tolo news.

The head of Kabul police media office, Basir Mujahid, confirmed the incident and said the perpetrators have been arrested by the police following the incident.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

This comes after almost 50 people were killed in suicide attack at a gathering of religious scholars in Kabul last week on Tuesday.

Assassination of prominent religious scholars by unidentified gunmen have increased unprecedentedly in Afghanistan over the past year.
