Fox Sports Asia Likens Iran to England
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - FOX Sports Asia has likened Iran national football team in the AFC Asian Cup to England in the World Cup.
Iran’s last Asia Cup victory came 43 years ago. But under the tutelage of former Real Madrid coach and Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz, it is a formidable side even now.
Iran may not have been in the winner column of late, but it has showed glimpses of rediscovering former glory with courageous showings as recent as in 2004, finishing 3rd in the tournament.
It may not appear to be favorite on paper, but like England when it comes to the World Cup, you can never write off the historical impetus that Iran has in the Asia Cup tournament.
Iran has been drawn with Yemen, Vietnam and Iraq in the Asian Cup.
The 2019 AFC Asian Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1.
