In Baghdad, Zarif Reiterates Close Ties between Iran, Iraq


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad for an official visit, said Iran and Iraq are determined to boost their relations, despite US efforts to create obstacle on the process.

Speaking upon his arrival at Baghdad airport, Zarif lauded the stances adopted by the Iraqi officials regarding the US unilateral economic sanctions against Tehran, and said the two neighboring countries are determined to further bolster and broaden relations and cooperation.

Zarif is visiting Baghdad for the first time after formation of the new Iraqi government.

The Iranian minister noted that after defeating Daesh (also ISIS) terrorist group, some sides such as the US tried to create obstacles on expansion of ties and cooperation between Iran and Iraq, but failed to attain their goals.

The US is the loser horse, Zarif said and advised other countries avoid betting on losing horse.

He further noted that he will confer with Iraqi officials and also attend at three economic meetings in Baghdad, Sulaymaniyah and Karbala.
