Rouhani Stresses Good Opportunities for Closer Iran-Armenia Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated his administration’s policy to boost ties with neighboring countries and said there are good opportunities for closer ties between Tehran and Yerevan in diverse fields, economy in particular.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always sought to develop its relations and cooperation with neighboring countries, especially Armenia, and is seriously pursuing this path,” Rouhani said at a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his accompanying delegation in Tehran on Wednesday.

He further hailed developments in Armenia as peaceful and on the democratic path and said the visit will strengthen political, economic, cultural and political relations between the two nations.

“There are good opportunities and capacities in Iran and Armenia to develop relations in various sectors of agriculture, including animal husbandry, cultivation of products and creation of agro-industrial companies,” Rouhani said.

The Armenian premier, for his part, voiced his country’s willingness to boost cooperation with the Islamic Republic in all areas and said the two countries’ capacities should be tapped to bolster the cordial ties.

During a ceremony earlier in the day, attended by Rouhani and Pashinyan, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Iranian National Standards Organization and Armenia’s Ministry of Economic Development and Investments.

Another cooperation document was also signed between the Supreme Council of the Free, Industrial and Special Economic Zones of Iran and Armenia’s Ministry of Economic Development and Investments.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Pashinyan has traveled to Tehran to hold talks with senior officials of the country on ways to boost bilateral relations.

Tehran and Yerevan in recent years have ramped up efforts to boost bilateral relations in diverse economic and political fields.

Back in August, Iran and Armenia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on joint production of agricultural machinery.
