TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri emphasized the need for growing capabilities of the country’s military capabilities, saying reliable deterrence power guarantees Iran’s security.

“The enemies of the Islamic Establishment have always changed and updated their tactics and spared no effort to harm the Islamic Iran, therefore, our sustainable security hinges upon increasing deterrence power,” Major General Baqeri said in an address to a military industrial research conference in Tehran on Monday.

Pointing to Iran’s delicate position in the region and various threats against the Islamic Republic over the past 40 years, the commander underlined the need for constantly upgrading the country’s military power by monitoring the threats and the country’s defense needs.

He also said that major defense projects in Iran prove to be a significant deterrent factor, since they change the tone of powerful countries vis-à-vis Iran.

The senior general went on to say that copying defense equipment would not satisfy Iran’s needs, emphasizing the need for innovation, homegrown technologies, and enhancement of technical know-how by relying on the local scientific potential.

“The sustainability of security in the country and the region would be preserved only with new and innovative moves in the defense spheres,” the commander added.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has reiterated on various occasions that Iran’s defense capabilities and power are not subject to negotiations.

“We will have no bargaining and dealing with the enemy over the country’s means of defense and over whatever provides or supports the national power,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in October 2017.

In comments in November 2018, Ayatollah Khamenei urged the Iranian Armed Forces to boost their military capabilities and preparedness in such a way that the enemies would not ever dare think of threaten the country.

The Leader said that Iran’s enhanced military preparedness would frighten the foes and be deterrent against the enemies, underlining, “The Islamic Republic is not intending to begin a war against anyone, but you (the Iranian military forces) should boost your capabilities in such a way that not only the enemy would be fearful and afraid of attacking Iran, but also thanks to the solidarity, might, and effective presence of the Armed Forces, the specter of threats against the Iranian nation would be swept away.”
