Iraqi Diplomat Sees No Limit to Growing Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iraqi deputy foreign minister called for development of Baghdad’s ties with Tehran in various military and economic areas.

There is no limit to the enhancement of relations between Iraq and Iran in all fields, particularly the security and defense cooperation and in the energy industry, Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Nazar al-Khairullah said in a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi in Tehran on Wednesday.

Iran will have a significant role in the reconstruction of Iraq, Khairullah added.

The two diplomats discussed issues relating to the common borderline at Arvand River, and the Iranian deputy minister stressed the need for the full implementation of the 1975 Algiers Agreement, signed between Iran and Iraq to settle their border disputes.

Sarmadi and Khairullah also highlighted the significance of an upcoming visit to Iraq by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Iranian president will visit the Arab country at the official invitation of Baghdad on March 11.

It will be Rouhani’s first official visit to Iraq during his tenure.

The Iranian president’s visit would come against the backdrop of Tehran’s efforts to boost its foreign trade in the US sanctions era.

Iraq’s foreign minister said recently that his country is “not obliged” to abide by sanctions imposed by the US against Iran and would be pursuing options to continue bilateral trade.

President of Iraq Barham Salih paid a visit to Tehran in November 2018 with a ranking delegation for a series of political and economic talks.
