Iran’s New Top Judge Vows Firm Action against Corruption, Insecurity

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – New Chief of Iran's Judiciary Hojatoleslam Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi expressed his determination to tackle corruption and take tough action against measures that upset security in the society.

Speaking at his induction ceremony on Monday, Raeisi described serious fight against corruption as one of the main priorities during his term, saying anti-corruption attempts begin from the Judiciary itself.

Referring to the battle against corruption as a basic public demand and a necessity emphasized by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, the new Judiciary chief said he will be focusing on plans to safeguard security in the society.

Praising the Iranian Armed Forces for turning Iran into one of the safest countries in the region, Raeisi underscored, “We will not tolerate violent and organized crimes or any disruption to security of the society and the country, and will not back off (from protecting security).”

In a decree on Thursday, Ayatollah Khamenei appointed the veteran judicial official as new head of the Judiciary.

Raeisi was the Islamic Republic’s former attorney general and, up to his appointment as the Judiciary chief, was the chief custodian of Astan Quds Razavi, the organization managing the affairs of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shiite Imam.

The Thursday decree also featured Ayatollah Khamenei’s opinion on the Judicial Development Document proposed by Raeisi.

The Leader called the document “beneficial and efficacious,” but advised that first and foremost, the new Judiciary chief should work out a timeline for the implementation of its entire content and commit both himself and his colleagues to its comprehensive fulfillment.

Secondly, Ayatollah Khamenei recommended that the new judicial document must pay due attention to people while being of a revolutionary nature and dedicated to fighting corruption.

Then, the Leader required enlisting by the Judiciary of “qualified human resources,” and called on the branch to promote justice and also revitalize public rights and legitimate freedoms.

Ayatollah Khamenei cautioned Raeisi against preferential treatment and advised him to employ “qualified, revolutionary, and eruditely youths” in the Judiciary’s various positions.

As a high point, the Leader also requested that the Judiciary, under its new headship, work closely and synergistically with the country’s executive and legislative branches.
