Scholar: Tragedies Like New Zealand Attack Ordinary in Middle East

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A University of Tehran’s professor denounced the US for giving birth to extremism, saying the tragedies and loss of lives like the recent terrorist attack on Muslims in New Zealand have become ordinary in the Middle East region.

In an address to a meeting on the threat of terrorism, held in Tehran on Monday, Mohammad Marandi said it was not a surprise to see the recent terror attack on Muslims in New Zealand, saying such killing of people takes place routinely in the Middle East region.

He further took a swipe at the US for targeting different countries by fabricating various cases, saying Washington itself abdicates responsibility for its destructive measures.

“Americans have imposed hunger on the Muslim people of Yemen, where millions of people are living in poverty and misery, while it is not being much considered by the world people,” the professor deplored.

Marandi also noted that the US has created extremism and has allowed Saudis to promote Wahhabism in order to produce terror and fear, while a number of Muslim communities are unfortunately siding with the US.

A gunman killed 50 people and wounded more than 40 during Friday prayers at two New Zealand mosques in the country’s worst ever mass shooting.

The assailant broadcast livestream footage on Facebook of the attack on one mosque in the city of Christchurch, mirroring the carnage played out in video games, after publishing a “manifesto” in which he denounced immigrants, calling them “invaders”.
