Iran, Russia Discuss Closer Cooperation in Combating Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Shoygu, held talks about a host of topics, including ways to boost cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism.

At the meeting in Moscow, the two defense ministers also held talks about bilateral ties between Iran and Russia as well as the latest developments in the region and the world.

Brigadier General Hatami hailed the bilateral relations and said the defense and security interactions betwee Tehran and Moscow have been growing in the light of the will of the two countries’ leaders.

Shoygu, for his part, said the military cooperation between Iran and Russia have reached a high level, adding that the cooperation within the framework of the Astana talks have had a major role in combatting terrorism and establishing a ceasefire in Syria.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s legitimate government against foreign-backed militancy.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the eighth Moscow Conference on International Security held from April 23 to 25.

The conference agenda encompasses the problems of utmost significance in terms of shaping views on international security.
