Progress in Afghan Peace Talks Could Pave the Way for Trump-Imran Meeting: Quereshi

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said a progress in Afghan peace talks could pave the way for a meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and US President Donald Trump.

Speaking a to local media outlet, Qureshi said a progress has been made in ongoing peace talks in Qatari capital of Doha and further progress could pave the way for a meeting between the leaders of Pakistan and the United States.

Qureshi further added that the leaders of the two countries have a deep interest in peace and stability of the region, Khaama Press news agency reported.

This comes as efforts are underway to find a negotiated political settlement to end the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

Pakistan stepped up efforts for the revival of Afghan peace talks amid growing pressures following the announcement of South Asia strategy in mid-2017 which resulted into the suspension of millions of Dollars in aid to the country by Washington.

The US and Taliban representatives have participated in six rounds of peace talks in Doha so far.
