China Urges US to ‘Act with Caution’ about Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – China’s senior diplomat Wang Yi told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that recent US words and actions against Iran had harmed the interests of China and its enterprises, and that Washington should show restraint, China’s foreign ministry said.

Wang said China hoped all parties would exercise restraint and act with caution to avoid escalating tensions, Reuters reported.

US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement that Pompeo spoke with Wang and discussed bilateral issues and US concerns about Iran, but gave no other details.

Last week, the US deployed warships and warplanes to the Middle East.

Tensions escalated even further after an incident with four tankers off the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, with US investigators reportedly blaming Iran.

No evidence of Iran’s role has emerged and Tehran has called for an investigation.

Iran has condemned the attack as “dreadful” and a lawmaker said Iranian suspicions fell on Israel.
