Iran-Syria Ties Deep-Rooted: Iranian Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior international adviser to the Iranian parliament speaker described Tehran-Damascus ties as deep-rooted and said that the two countries should join forces to withstand bullying of hegemonic powers.

Speaking at a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on Monday, Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Syrian-Iranian relations are deep-rooted and that the two countries are in the same trench in the face of hegemonic powers, SANA reported.

He added that the “challenges and conspiracies targeting the two countries would only make the two brotherly nations more determined to defend their rights in the face of the hegemony attempts which target the region as a whole”.

The top Syrian diplomat also expressed Damascus’ appreciation for Tehran’s support of his country’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

Muallem also praised Iran’s continued support for Syria in its battle against terrorists that have waged a war against the Arab country thus endangering the security and stability in the region.

Separately on Monday, Syria's parliament speaker, Hammoudeh Sabbagh, held a meeting with Amir Abdollahian and his accompanying delegation, urging enhancement of parliamentary relations between the two countries.

Sabbagh lauded the Iranian leadership and government’s support for Syrian people, reaffirming Syria’s support for Iran in confronting US threats.

He also described Syrian-Iranian relations as “strong.”

Amir Abdollahian also sat down with Syrian deputy foreign minister Faisal Mekdad.

During the meeting, Mekdad lauded efforts by the Iranian leadership to support Syria, reiterating Syria’s support for Iran in the face of Western arrogance.

For his turn, Abdollahian affirmed that Iran’s leadership and people stand as one in support of the Syrian leadership and people in the face of terrorism.

Over the past years, Iran has been supporting Syria in its battle against militants and Takfiri terrorists. The foreign-backed groups started a campaign of bloodshed and destruction against the Arab country in 2011.
