Yemeni Troops Seize Several Areas near Saudi Border

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Yemeni troops along with fighters from popular forces managed to score a major advance along the Yemeni-Saudi border this week after launching a big offensive against forces loyal to ex-Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan region.

Backed by heavy artillery, the Yemeni forces began the offensive in the Jahfan area of the Jizan region, which later resulted in a big advance for them, al-Masdar News reported on Thursday.

They managed to capture several sites in the area following the retaliatory attack, the report added.

The Yemeni forces also seized a considerable amount of weapons and munitions and proceeded to withdraw from the sites before Saudi warplanes could find a chance to bomb the area.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 91,000 lives over the past four and a half years.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.
