Iran Rejects France’s Call for Release of Dual National as ‘Interference’

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi rejected France’s call for the release of a detained French-Iranian national as “interference in the internal affairs” of the Islamic Republic and said such moves would make the legal process more complicated.

France’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday demanded Iran release dual national Fariba Adelkhah, a senior research fellow at Sciences Po university in Paris, who was detained earlier this year.

In response, Mousavi said, “The dual citizenship of Iranian nationals is not recognized by the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran and, therefore, Ms. Adelkhah is regarded as an Iranian citizen and enjoys all the citizenship rights for Iranian nationals.”

He further emphasized that the Iranian Judiciary is dealing with Adelkhah’s case carefully within the framework of the country’s fair trial rules.

“This move (by France) will not only fail to help resolve the issue but rather make the legal process more complicated,” the Iranian spokesman added.

Mousavi also described the move as “interference in the internal affairs” of Iran and said it was unacceptable.
