Iranian Rose Society (IRS) Launched: Deputy Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s deputy agriculture minister said the country has launched its Rose Society in a bid to promote the culture, preservation and appreciation of the Rose.

Society/Culture

"The macro goals of the Rose Society includes coordination of Rose produce, policymaking and job standards-setting in order to boost the productivity and guild potential of Rose growers at all levels," Hossein Shirzad, who is also the chief executive of Iran’s Central Organization for Rural Cooperatives, said.

Noting that this society aims to improve the country’s rose standard through education and research, he added that the growers who meet the requirements could join the society as inspectors or board members.

According to Mehdi Sharifi, the head of Iran’s Flowers and Plants Union, Iran is the world’s 10th biggest producer of flowers and plants, though the country has only a 0.3% share in global export markets, making it the 107th flower exporter.

Sharifi believes the country’s meager share in export markets is rooted in poor standards, high production costs and lack of mechanization.
