In a telephone conversation with Iran’s First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri on Saturday, Abdul-Mahdi praised the Iranian pilgrims for taking part in the Arbaeen processions in Iraq.

Highlighting the role of Arbaeen gathering in the unity of regional Muslim nations, the Iraqi prime minister called for broad plans to enhance the ties between Baghdad and Tehran.

Jahangiri, for his part, expressed gratitude to Iraq for playing host to millions of Arbaeen pilgrims, saying the huge congregation has become a manifestation of the Muslim world’s power and unity.

The Iranian first vice president visited the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) in Karbala on Saturday morning.

Arbaeen, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shiite Imam.

Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli has announced that around 3.5 million Iranians have travelled to Iraq during this year’s Arbaeen season.
