Europe Doing Nothing to Save JCPOA: Iranian MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mojtaba Zonnour said the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), are doing nothing to save the accord.

Speaking to Tasnim, Zonnour pointed to Iran’s fourth step in reducing its commitments under the JCPOA and said Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) takes decisions on the issue in its meetings attended by Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.

“In every step in reducing commitments under the JCPOA, the (Iranian) administration’s policy is to give Europe an opportunity to review their decisions and policies,” he said.

The Europeans have not taken any step to save the JCPOA, the lawmaker deplored, adding that Iran’s steps in scaling back its commitments should be such that Europe would be forced to act.

Iran on Wednesday took the 4th step in reducing its commitments under the JCPOA in reaction to the continued failure of the European parties to meet their obligations to the agreement.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.

Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the US withdrawal, but the three EU parties to the deal (France, Britain, and Germany) have failed to ensure Iran’s economic interests.

The EU’s inaction forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments to the nuclear deal, including a rise in the stockpile of enriched uranium.

Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the JCPOA but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.
