Iran Drops Six Spots at FIFA Ranking

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran dropped six spots in the latest FIFA World Ranking that was released on Thursday as Japan became Asia’s top ranked team.

Iran dropped to second at 33 following its recent defeat to Iraq in the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, while Japan remained at 28.

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers in Asia have also made an impression. Myanmar (136th, up 11), for example, is the only team to have advanced more than 10 positions, having done so thanks to impressive wins over Nepal (170th, down 3), Tajikistan (121st, down 5) and Mongolia (190th, down 4). Kuwait (147th, up 9) also made a substantial jump on the back of their fine results in the Qatar 2022 preliminaries.

Belgium will end the year as FIFA’s top-ranked team after winning all ten of their games in 2019.

Belgium extended its lead over World Cup champion France going into a four-month break for the top national teams.

Brazil, England and Uruguay are unchanged as Nos. 3-5. World Cup runner-up Croatia is No. 6, trading places with European champion Portugal at No. 7.

The next FIFA World Ranking will be published on December 19, 2019.
