EU Takes No Practical Measure to Meet JCPOA Obligations: Iranian MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal have taken no practical measure to fulfill their commitments under the accord.

Speaking to Tasnim, Naqavi Hosseini pointed to Iran’s 4th step in reducing its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and said the strategy to scale back the nuclear obligations was a “correct” one and should have been adopted sooner.

“The purpose of steps to reduce JCPOA obligations is to change the behavior of the other party, and the reason for taking these steps is to protest the other party’s failure to fulfill its obligations,” he said.

“... (however), it has had no effect on the other party so far as it has fulfilled no commitment,” the parliamentarian added.

Earlier this month, Iran took the 4th step in reducing its commitments under the JCPOA in reaction to the continued failure of the European parties to meet their obligations to the agreement.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.

Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the US withdrawal, but the three EU parties to the deal (France, Britain, and Germany) have failed to ensure Iran’s economic interests.

The EU’s inaction forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments to the nuclear deal, including a rise in the stockpile of enriched uranium.

Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the JCPOA but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.
