Iraqi Vote to Expel US Troops A Prelude to Regional Stability: Iran President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the importance of a resolution passed by the Iraqi parliament calling on the government to expel US troops from the Arab country and said the move is a prelude to more regional stability and security.

In a telephone conversation with Iraqi President Barham Salih on Sunday night, Rouhani pointed to the US move to assassinate Iran’s top commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad and said the governments and nations of Iran and Iraq will be together as before.

Martyr Soleimani made great efforts for the security of the region, Iran and Iraq, and if it were not for him and his hard work, Iraq’s Erbil would have definitely fallen to the hands of Daesh, Rouhani stated.

He hailed the Iraqi parliament’s vote to expel American troops from the country as an important step and a prelude to greater stability and security in the region.

“Certainly, the blood of the top generals of the Resistance (Movement) will bring about a new development in the region and will be a factor in the strong bond between the two nations,” he added.

The Iraqi president, for his part, emphasized the deep and historic ties between the two nations, saying that the unity and friendship of the two nations will undoubtedly play a significant role in promoting security in the region.

General Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha'abi (PMU), and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday.

The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.

In a message on Friday morning, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei warned that harsh revenge awaits the criminals behind the martyrdom of General Soleimani.

Ayatollah Khamenei also reminded all friends and enemies of the Iranian general that the resistance path will continue vigorously, stressing that continued battle and ultimate victory will disappoint the murderers and criminals.
