Iran to Target Any Place Used for Hostile Moves against It: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi defended a recent move by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) to target a US airbase in Iraq, saying the Islamic Republic will target any place used to carry out a conspiracy against it.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Monday, Mousavi pointed to the IRGC’s recent missile attack on Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq in retaliation of the US move to assassinate Iran’s revered commander Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and said, “As we had announced, we would target anywhere from which a conspiracy is carried out against Iran.”

“The Iraqi government had been informed of our defensive measures and firm response to the Americans…,” he said.

“We have always called for non-interference of foreign forces on Iraqi soil, and when Iraq formally asked for Iran’s help, we provided our assistance with the knowledge of the (Arab) country’s government,” the spokesman stated.

“We have declared that we would target anywhere from which an action is taken against Iran,” he stressed.

General Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha'abi (PMU), and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport on Friday, January 3.

The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.

In the early hours of Wednesday, January 8, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) targeted the US airbase of Ain al-Assad in retaliation for the US move.
