2 Elderly Men Die of Coronavirus in Iran, Deputy Minister Confirms

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy health minister confirmed reports that two elderly people have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the city of Qom, 150 kilometers south of Tehran.

A hospital in Qom has been allocated for the treatment of contagious diseases in the city, Qassem Janbabaei said late on Wednesday, confirming reports that two people had died earlier in the day of coronavirus, COVID-19.

He further urged people to stay calm, observe personal hygiene and preferably avoid crowded places.

There was no reason to panic as there have been no reports of coronavirus in other cities so far, the deputy minister said.

The announcement of coronavirus cases come a few weeks after authorities evacuated dozens of Iranian students from the central Chinese city of Wuhan where the virus began reportedly in an illegal wildlife market.

The 57 students were released from a 14-day quarantine inside a hotel in southwest Tehran on Tuesday.

More than 2,000 people have died and nearly 100,000 people remain affected by coronavirus which is centered in the Chinese province of Hubei.
