Yemen Army Inflicts Major Losses on Militants in Ma’rib: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces Brigadier General Yahya Saree said the country’s military on Tuesday inflicted major casualties on Saudi-backed mercenaries in the central province of Ma’rib.

Tens of Saudi-backed militants were killed in the Sirwah district of Ma'rib on Tuesday morning by Yemeni troops after they attempted to make advances towards the east of the province, General Saree said in a statement.

He added that Saudi warplanes also conducted at least 20 strikes against residential areas in the provinces of Ma’rib and Jawf in the past hours.

The multiple land and aerial assaults come a few days after the Saudi-led coalition claimed it was halting military operations in Yemen in support of UN efforts to end the five-year war and avoid the outbreak of the coronavirus in war-wracked Yemen.

In a report released on Sunday, Yemen’s Legal Center for Rights and Development, an independent monitoring group, put the civilian death toll in the war-torn Arab country at 16,075. The fatalities, it said, comprise 3,901 children and 2,462 women.

The rights body said the bombings have also wounded 41,476 civilians, including 4,220 children and 3,039 women.

Armed with American and British ammunition and European warplanes, among other Western-supported military hardware, the kingdom launched the campaign against Yemen in March 2015.
