Massive Power Outage Hits NYC's Upper Manhattan (+Video)

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A massive power outage was reported Friday morning in the upper part of Manhattan, knocking out not only lights but also cellphone service.

A Con Edison spokesperson tells NBC it is investigating the widespread outages across Harlem, Central Park and Lenox Hill. At one point it was pitch black as far as eyes could see along Broadway at 73rd Street going north.

Power came back on after around 20 minutes for parts of the Upper West Side, though some spotty outage reports lingered thereafter.

Con Ed’s outage map showed about 140,000 customers without power in Manhattan as of 6 a.m., but that was down to 42,000 by 6:30 a.m. -- likely remnants of the damage from Tropical Storm Isaias last Tuesday.

Many subway lines are delayed and Metro-North is now saying 10-15 minute delays in and out of Grand Central because of the outage.

There are delays and multiple impacts to 1, 2 and 3 service because of a loss of power in Manhattan, the MTA said, and the city warned of disruptions to the A, B, C and D lines as well.
