Iran Reaffirms Support for Afghan Republic Structure, Constitution

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s embassy in Kabul highlighted the support that an Iranian diplomatic delegation has reaffirmed for the republic system in Afghanistan, the Afghan constitution, and intra-Afghan talks for sustainable peace.

The embassy announced in a statement that Tehran’s principled policy on Afghanistan is to protect the achievements of the past two decades, saying the Islamic Republic has strongly supported the Afghan presidential elections and the efforts to settle the disputes that broke out among the political rivals after the polls.

The statement also noted that an Iranian delegation, led by Foreign Ministry’s special envoy to Afghanistan Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian, that visited Kabul has pursued the policy of supporting the republic structure and the constitution of Afghanistan in the meetings with top Afghan authorities.

In all meetings, the Iranian delegation stressed the need for unity among Afghan political groups to protect Afghanistan’s achievements and the political rights of the Afghan people and ensure peaceful coexistence.

During his stay in Kabul, Taherian met with top Afghan officials and with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons.

In a telephone conversation with his Afghan counterpart in August, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed Tehran’s support for the peace process in Afghanistan under the guidance of the Kabul government, hoping that the intra-Afghan negotiations would yield results with the inclusion of all Afghan groups.
