Iran Industry Ministry Gets New Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Parliament on Tuesday gave a vote of confidence to the president’s pick for the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade.

In an open session of the Parliament on Tuesday morning, the lawmakers approved Alireza Razm-Hosseini for the Industry Ministry with 175 votes in favor, 80 against, and 9 abstentions from a total of 264 votes.

In May, Rouhani dismissed the former minister of industry, Reza Rahmani, and appointed Modarres Khiabani as caretaker to the ministry to handle the situation in the domestic car market and ensure a steady supply of basic commodities amid the cruel sanctions against Iran.

Modarres Khiabani failed to garner the minimum number of votes by the Parliament for the post of minister in August.

Razm-Hosseini is taking office at the Industry Ministry amid ongoing economic problems that have seen car prices skyrocket in recent months.

Also, the Iranian rial has fallen to its lowest ever rate against the US dollar on the unofficial market.
